Gabon: Opposition activists arrested September 6

Event

Three opposition activists are detained as of Thursday, September 7, over allegations of disturbance to the public order. They were arrested on Saturday, September 2, while distributing leaflets ahead of a political meeting scheduled for September 4. Several others are still being questioned by the police. The hearing of the three activists is expected to take place on Monday, September 18. Protests may occur across the country.

Context

Main political opposition leader and former presidential candidate Jean Ping, as well as other opposition leaders, were reportedly prevented from leaving the country over the weekend of September 2-3. According to a government spokesperson, this temporary measure was in response to what authorities perceived as an opposition call for “disturbance to the public order." On August 18, Ping called for a rebellion and insurrection against the government. On August 25, rallies in support of Ping took place in several cities throughout the country, leading to several arrests and security force interventions in Libreville and Port-Gentil. . Police forces reportedly dispersed at least 300 opposition supporters demonstrating in Libreville on Monday, September 4.

Ping has been contesting the results of the August 27 presidential elections, which resulted in the victory of President Ali Bongo for a second seven-year term. As a result, political and social tensions are running high across the country and are compounded by a poor economic situation.
