Guatemala: Red alert for San Marcos following earthquake
Red alert issued for San Marcos department due to major damage caused by September 7 earthquake
Event
A “red” alert - the highest level - has been declared for the southwestern department of San Marcos following the devastating 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the region on September 7. The earthquake resulted in at least four people injured along with the destruction of hundreds of homes and damage to numerous schools and roadways.
Aftershocks have been detected since the initial earthquake, whose epicenter was located off Mexico’s Pacific coast approximately 260 km (162 mi) west of San Marcos.
Advice
Individuals in the region should be prepared for further aftershocks, anticipate transportation and other disruptions, and adhere to any advice issued by the local authorities.
During an earthquake, protect your head from falling debris as best you can and only attempt to evacuate if on the ground floor. After a major earthquake, check buildings for damage, including downed power lines or damaged gas lines, and evacuate until the building is declared safe.
