Hungary: Migration crisis state of emergency extended August 30

On Wednesday, August 30, the Hungarian government decided to extend the nationwide state of emergency implemented in response to the mass migration crisis that has impacted the country. According to Hungarian law, the state of emergency can be extended by a period of six months, during which time the government can intensify border checks and allows the army to assume the task of registering asylum seekers. The government cited an increased threat of terrorism as justification for the extension.

Context

The state of emergency was originally declared in September 2015 after hundreds of thousands of refugees passed through the central European state on their way to EU countries in western and northern Europe.
