Heavy rains and flooding reported in Koramangala area of Bengaluru September 27; further rains forecast for September 28

Warning

Event

Local media reported heavy rains and flooding on Wednesday, September 27, in Hosur-Sarjapur and Anugraha Layout in Koramangala, Bengaluru. Forecasts say that heavy rains will continue into Thursday, September 28, potentially exacerbating flood conditions. At least one death has been reported as of Wednesday evening (local time), along with moderate property damage in some areas. Localized transportation disruptions are likely to persist in the Koramangala area in the coming days.

Context

Torrential rain is common in India during the monsoon season, which runs between June and September. Bengaluru normally receives an average of 148 mm (6 in) of rain in the month of September, but has already received 295 mm (11.5 in) to date this month.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities, monitor the situation and weather forecasts, and anticipate transportation disruptions and potentially hazardous conditions.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult. Finally, because floodwater may also contain wastewater or chemical products, wear boots and try to avoid any contact with the water. All items having come into contact with the water should be washed and disinfected and any foodstuffs discarded.
