Spain: Road closures in Barcelona Sep. 22

Event

A total of 76 streets in Barcelona will be closed to motor vehicle traffic on Friday, September 22, to celebrate World Car Free Day. The majority of streets affected are small, secondary roads. Major thoroughfares affected by the closures include:

• Via Laietana from 08:00 (local time) until 21:00;
• Gran de Gràcia between Avenida de la Diagonal and Plaza de Lesseps from 11:00 until 21:00.

Officials have planned over 100 activities throughout the day, including workshops and games, among others.

Context

In 2016, 125,000 fewer trips were made by car on World Car Free Day, leading to a 7.5 percent decrease in traffic. Furthermore, authorities noted significant improvement in air quality.
