Costa Rica: Rain and flood alerts nationwide October 4-5
Much of the country placed on red alert October 4 due to torrential rain and flooding; schools closed nationwide October 5

Heavy rain struck much of Costa Rica on Wednesday, October 4, leading to widespread flooding. Red alerts are in effect for the large majority of the country (Pacífico Central, Pacífico Sur, Pacífico Norte, Huetar Norte, Valle Central), with the exception of the Caribbean coast (Huetar Caribe), where lower yellow alerts have been issued. Potentially hazardous conditions are likely. Associated transportation disruptions, telecommunication issues, and power outages are possible. Schools will be closed nationwide on October 5.
Context
Flooding is relatively common during the rainy season, which lasts from late May until early November in Costa Rica. This year’s rainy season has been particularly intense, leading to numerous instances of flooding and landslides. Last month Costa Rica experienced its rainiest September in recent years. October is typically the rainiest month of the year.
Advice
Individuals in Costa Rica are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities, monitor the situation and weather forecasts, and anticipate transportation disruptions and potentially hazardous conditions. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult. Finally, because floodwater may also contain wastewater or chemical products, wear boots and try to avoid any contact with the water. All items having come into contact with the water should be washed and disinfected and any foodstuffs discarded.
