Libya: Deadly attack in Misrata Oct. 4

Attack at Courts Complex in Misrata kills at least three, injures at least 35 October 4

Warning

Event

On Wednesday, October 4, at approximately 11:30 (local time) gunfire as well as at least two explosions were reported at the Misrata Courts Complex. Initial reports suggest the attack was launched by at least two attackers carrying IEDs and automatic weapons. At least three people have been killed and 35 others injured. The attackers were subsequently killed by security forces. A local Islamic State (IS) affiliate has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Context

Throughout 2016, Libyan forces linked to the UN-backed government in Tripoli engaged in combat with IS in several coastal cities, while US Africa Command (AFRICOM) forces conducted numerous airstrikes on IS positions in Libya. Though IS forces have lost significant territory since their initial expansion into Libya in 2015, isolated groups of IS militants continue to attack outposts controlled by both the Tobruk- and Tripoli-based governments.

Following the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been divided into rival governments and factions with their own militias and political parties. The security situation in Libya remains precarious and there is little to no sign of a return of relative stability in the near-term.

Advice

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
