Niger: Violent clashes between protesters and police in Niamey, Oct. 29

Event

Violent clashes broke out between protesters and security forces in Niamey on the morning of Sunday, October 29. More than 1,000 people had gathered at Toumo to protest the 2018 state budget. Clashes reportedly broke out when a group of demonstrators attempted to walk towards Concertation Square, in the direction of Parliament, when police intervened.

Unrest is being reported in the Nouveau Marché and in Lacouroussou areas. Police are expected to continue to be present at the scene and have reportedly used tear gas to disperse crowds during previous protests. Localized traffic disruptions are possible.

Context

Niger frequently experiences violent demonstrations. Both large and small street demonstrations occur regularly, often near government buildings, university campuses, or public parks. Many demonstrations have involved rock throwing and tire burning, especially at key intersections in Niamey.
