Spain: Increased security at Catalan borders and travel hubs October 10 /update 12

Event

On Tuesday, October 10, the Spanish national police increased security measures at airports, rail stations and bus stations in the Catalonia region as well as at Catalonia’s foreign borders in light of ongoing tensions related to Catalonia’s push for independence. In addition, the national police has also increased its security presence around Catalonia’s Parliament ahead of a scheduled 19:00 (local time) speech by the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, where he is expected to make a formal announcement regarding Catalonia's bid for independence.

Increased waiting times are expected at security and immigration checkpoints at travel hubs - notably Barcelona’s El Prat International Airport (BCN) - and land border crossings throughout the region.

Context

A referendum on Catalonian independence was held on October 1. The poll was declared illegal by the central government, which had attempted to block the vote through a series of logistical and legal measures as well as through force. At least 893 people were injured in clashes in Catalonia between pro-independence protesters and police on October 1.

According to Catalan officials, 42.3 percent of Catalans voted in the referendum, 90 percent of whom were in favor of independence.
