Spain: Activists to stage protest march in Madrid late Nov. 22

Activists to stage protest march from Calle de Genova to PSOE headquarters in Madrid, Spain, from 21:00 Nov. 22. Heightened security likely.

Warning

Activists plan to stage a protest march in Madrid from 26 Calle de Genova to the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) headquarters on Calle de Ferraz from 21:00 Nov. 22. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce the PSOE-led government. At least 1,500 activists participated in a related demonstration in recent days; while attempting to reach the PSOE headquarters, some demonstrators clashed with law enforcement officers.

Police will likely deploy along the march route, particularly near the PSOE headquarters, to monitor and facilitate the demonstration. Law enforcement officers will likely also close streets along the march route, causing localized transport disruptions. Counterdemonstrations are possible. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or between ideologically opposed individuals cannot be ruled out and may escalate into clashes.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near or between 26 Calle de Genova and the PSOE headquarters. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
