Smoking ban to go into effect on 20 popular beaches on November 1

Officials announced on Wednesday, October 11, that a new law banning smoking on 20 popular beaches will go into effect on November 1. Those caught in violation of the ban will be fined THB 100,000 (USD 3000) and may face a jail term of up to one year. If successful, authorities plan to eventually apply the ban to all beaches in the country.

The ban applies to the following beaches: Mae Phim in Rayong; Laem Sing in Chanthaburi; Bang Saen, Pattaya, and Tham Pang in Chon Buri; Cha-am in Phetchaburi; Hua Hin and Khao Takiap in Prachuap Khiri Khan;  Patong in Phuket; Bo Phut in Surat Thani; Sai Ri in Chumphon; Chalatas in Songkhla; Tha Was Sukri in Pattani;  Koh Khai Nok and Koh Khai Nai in Phangnga; and Phra Ae and Khlong Dao in Krabi.

Context

The smoking ban on beaches comes after a government study found that discarded cigarette butts made up over 30 percent of all waste found on beaches.
