Bahrain: Protests to be held November 10 following Arbaeen
Unauthorized protests planned for November 10 following Arbaeen celebrations the day before; clashes between demonstrators and security forces possible
Event
Shi'a opposition groups in Bahrain have called for unauthorized protests to take place on Friday, November 10, in Al-Eker starting at 19:00 (local time), as well as in Abu Saiba and Nuwaidarat. As public demonstrations are not authorized by the Bahraini authorities, police units may use force and tear gas to disperse crowds. Protesters could respond by throwing Molotov cocktails, detonating improvised explosive devices (IEDs), attempting to block roads, or burning tires. Localized transportation disruptions are possible.
Additionally, Thursday, November 9, marks the start of Arbaeen celebrations and processions. Arbaeen falls forty days after Ashura, ending a period of mourning for Shi'a Muslims commemorating the martyrdom of Hussain. Processions are likely nationwide, especially in central Manama. Events surrounding Arbaeen are expected to be peaceful, but there is a risk of confrontations with security forces especially if anti-government protesters decide to stage demonstrations during the gatherings.
Context
Bahrain's Shi'a Muslims accuse the royal family and the government of marginalizing their community. Protests have taken place weekly in the past months and can result in violent clashes. In late May, five activists protesting in Diraz were killed during clashes with security forces.
Advice
Individuals present in Bahrain are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations and to monitor any developments to the situation.
