Costa Rica: Increase in reported car break-ins
Police agency reports an increase in car break-ins nationwide; take necessary precautions

Rates of car break-ins are increasing in Costa Rica, according to the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ). In 2016, 5072 cases were reported in the country, up from 4561 in 2015. The areas experiencing the greatest recent increase in cases are the cantons of San José, Alajuela, Heredia, Montes de Oca, Desamparados, Santa Cruz (Guanacaste), and Cartago.
According to a report by the OIJ, most breaks-ins occur on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between 18:00 and 21:00 (local time).

Individuals in Costa Rica are advised to remain vigilant at all times. Do not leave your car in an isolated area, and conceal all valuables.
