Dominican Republic: National doctor strike Nov. 16
National doctor strike November 16, service disruptions likely; related protests possible
Event
Doctors at hospitals throughout the country are currently staging a strike set to run until 06:00 (local time) on Friday, November 17. During this period hospitals will likely only offer emergency services. As such, scheduled appointments may be canceled and longer-than-normal wait times are likely in emergency rooms. Associated protests with the potential to lead to clashes are possible, particularly in the capital Santo Domingo.
Context
This is the seventh doctor strike held in the country in the past two months. Various other strikes have been held over the past couple years to demand higher salaries and increased investment in the healthcare system, among other grievances. Further doctor strikes are likely in the coming weeks and months.
Advice
Individuals present in the Dominican Republic are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, to confirm doctor’s appointments, and to anticipate longer waiting times in hospitals.
