Anti-corruption group Marcha Verde (Green March) has called for protests to take place on Sunday, January 28, in front of the Palacio Nacional in Santo Domingo. The demonstrations are expected to remain nonviolent but clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out. Marcha Verde's protest is set to coincide with the anniversary weekend of the birth of the Dominican Republic's founding father, Juan Pablo Duarte.

Context

Marcha Verde has organized regular demonstrations across the country over the past year to demand an end to impunity and widespread government corruption. There has been growing public outcry over recent revelations of more than a decade of allegedly corrupt government contracts and bribery linked with the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
