Iran: Major air pollution in Khuzestan province

Spike in air pollution in Khuzestan province in recent days; many schools and other public institutions closed as of January 23

Warning

Event

Air pollution in Khuzestan province (southern Iran) has reached alarming levels in recent days, pushing the authorities to partially close schools and public institutions; many closures remain in effect as of Tuesday, January 23, and are expected to continue until conditions improve. Approximately 1300 people were being treated for respiratory problems in local hospitals as of January 22.

On January 23, Ayatollah Khamenei approved a proposition by the government to invest USD 150 million to fight air pollution in Khuzestan province.

Context

Airborne concentration of fine particles hit 175 micrograms per cubic meter in Khuzestan province on January 22; according to the World Health Organization, levels above 25 are unhealthy. This air pollution is reportedly caused by an overuse of hydric sources in the region, which leads to the formation of dust clouds that prevent polluted air from escaping main cities.

Pollution can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation and aggravate cardiovascular and respiratory conditions (such as asthma).

Advice

Individuals present in Khuzestan province – particularly those with existing respiratory issues or other vulnerabilities - are advised to limit outdoor activities until the situation normalizes and to exercise caution when driving due to reduced visibility linked to smog.
