Local authorities have issued a “level 2 cyclone alert” for Tropical Storm Berguitta, which is expected to hit Mauritius January 17-18. Hazardous sea and weather conditions are anticipated in the northwest of the island, including winds up to 200 km/h (125 mph), sea swells up to 7 m (22 ft), and heavy rainfall. Schools across the island were closed on Tuesday, January 16, and will remain closed until further notice.
