Thailand: Flooding in Bangkok Jan. 31 amid heavy rains

Flooding in Bangkok Jan. 31; further rain forecast through Feb. 6

Warning

Event

Several hours of heavy rain caused flooding and subsequently disrupted traffic in Bangkok and neighboring Samut Prakan province on Wednesday, January 31. Bangkok’s Bang Na district was the most affected, with 12 cm (4.7 in) of precipitation.

Thailand’s Meteorological Department issued a weather warning on January 31, forecasting heavy rains and strong wind gusts in northeastern, eastern, and central regions – including Bangkok – through February 6. Further flooding is possible. From February 2, cold weather conditions will extend to upper Thailand, with a drop in temperatures.

Context

Thailand’s northeast monsoon season, from November to March, brings cooler temperatures and generally less chance of rainfall for the north of the country. However, the more exposed Gulf Coast of the southern peninsula is impacted by strong winds and heavy rains.

Advice

Individuals in Thailand are advised to monitor weather forecasts and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
