Algeria: Doctor strike intensifies
Medical resident (doctor) protests continue; workers threaten to stop providing minimum services in hospitals
Event
A national strike by medical residents (doctors) continues as of Thursday, February 1, following failed negotiation attempts with the Ministry of Justice. Striking workers announced that they would intensify their movement in the coming days, threatening to stop providing a minimum level of services in hospitals, guaranteed by Algerian law. Additional associated protests (e.g. sit-ins) are to be anticipated throughout the duration of the strike.
The Algerian paramedic union (Syndicat Algérien des Paramédicaux [SAP]) announced that it would launch a new, nationwide indefinite strike on Monday, February 5. The two movements are expected to cause severe medical service disruptions in the coming days and weeks.
Context
The Autonomous Medical Residents Collective (CAMRA) launched the protest in early January to demand the suspension of mandatory civil service for Algerian doctors.
Advice
Individuals in Algeria are advised to avoid any form of protest due to the risk of violence , keep abreast of the situation, confirm medical appointments and anticipate increased waiting times at hospitals.
