Libya: Potential impending pro-GNA attack in Tajura as of February 2 /update 1
Pro-GNA attack possible in Tajura (Tripoli district) in the coming hours or days, prompting local security forces to issue state of emergency February 2
Event
Local security forces aligned with Bashir al-Bogra in Tajura (Tripoli district) issued a state of emergency on Friday, February 2, which was in effect in the area as of 18:30 (local time). The state of emergency was declared as the local forces believe that pro-Government of National Accord (pro-GNA) forces may attack their positions, and attempt to secure the area around Mitiga International Airport (MJI) in the coming hours or days. Heightened security measures (including increased patrols, additional checkpoints, etc.) are expected and armed clashes are possible in the area in the near term.
Context
The potential pro-GNA attack would, if it transpires, come after a large-scale offensive against MJI by the 33 Infantry Battalion (al-Bogra militia) and its allies from Tajura on January 15. Although negotiations have had some success at a local level, militia groups involved remain deeply opposed to each other both politically and religiously. Early on February 2, the RADA Special Deterrence Forces (RDF) posted the confessions of three fighters they captured during the January 15 offensive. Tensions have remained high in the area with reports on January 23 that the Tripoli Revolutionaries Brigade (TRB) and RDF were planning to launch an attack against a 33 Infantry Brigades camp in Tajura.
Al-Bogra had reportedly been consolidating support against the RDF under a new "unified Tajura Battalion" in recent weeks. The battalion is expected to include Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) supporters from the cities of Zuwara, Ajaylat, Zawiyah, Gharyan, Tajura, Msallata, Zliten, and Misrata. He is also known to have forces to the south of Tripoli and they may also become a target for GNA-aligned forces in the future should they deal successfully with forces in Tajura.
Advice
Individuals in Libya are advised to avoid the affected area, closely monitor the situation, and confirm flight statuses prior to departure for MJI.
In general, the security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
