Sri Lanka: Nationwide local elections February 10

Local elections take place nationwide on February 10; protests and rallies likely, particularly in Colombo

Warning

Event

Local elections are taking place across Sri Lanka on Saturday, February 10. Polls opened nationwide at 07:00 (local time), and will close at 16:00. Authorities have deployed approximately 65,000 security personnel at polling stations to prevent any potential unrest. While likely to remain peaceful, political rallies are expected in most urban centers, particularly in Colombo.

Transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of any protest or rally, as well as an increased security presence. In the event of unrest, clashes between security personnel and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

The February 10 elections are the first time that all local constituencies will vote under the current electoral system that was ratified in 2012. The new system will elect 40 percent of delegates using closed list proportional representation and 60 percent of delegates using first-past-the-post voting.

Advice

Individuals in Sri Lanka are advised to avoid all demonstrations and protests due to the risk of violence, anticipate localized transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
