Dominican Rep.: Tensions high in Pedernales

President Danilo Medina deploys additional soldiers to Pedernales March 12 amid rising tensions against Haitians

Warning

Event

Tensions are high between local residents and Haitian nationals in the city of Pedernales. Dominican residents reportedly issued an ultimatum to Haitians living in the city, located on the Haitian border, to leave by Tuesday, March 13, or face violent reprisals. The ultimatum was reportedly made after authorities arrested two Haitians in connection to the murder of a Dominican couple in Le Quemao. Clashes between Dominican residents and Haitians and related demonstrations are possible in the coming days.

President Danilo Medina has ordered additional security forces be deployed to the city and the mayor of Pedernales closed the binational border market on March 12 as a security precaution.

Advice

Individuals in or around Pedernales are advised to monitor the situation and avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
