DRC: Ethnic violence breaks out in Ituri province on March 1 /update 1

On Thursday, March 1, violent ethnic clashes broke out in the village of Drodro (Ituri province), leaving at least 33 people dead and several more wounded. The fighting, between Hema herders and Lendu farmers, is primarily over land usage.

Further clashes are likely in the coming weeks.

Context

Violence between the Hema and the Lendu communities has recently increased. According to a local humanitarian source, approximately 200,000 people have been displaced since mid-December, while at least 100 people have been killed.

The government's limited role in the eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, have led to continued insecurity in the area.
