Fiji: Country on high alert due to possible cyclone

Authorities urge the population to be on high alert as more severe weather moves towards Fiji; cyclone formation possible

Warning

Event

The government urged its population Friday, April 6, to be on high alert and to prepare for more severe weather over the next few days. Weather projections indicate a new cyclone is forming to the west of the archipelago, a week after Tropical Cyclone Josie battered the island nation, killing six. Flood warnings are in force in low-lying areas, along streams, and in other areas in the western part of the country. A tropical depression is expected to develop by Saturday, April 7, and possibly intensify further into a tropical cyclone as the storm system moves towards Fiji.

Context

Due to changing weather patterns, storms are becoming more frequent and severe in Fiji. Some 100,000 Fijians were affected by flooding in the western part of the nation as a result of Tropical Cyclone Josie.

Advice

Individuals present in Fiji are advised to monitor the situation via local weather reports and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
