Gambia: Peaceful protest in Banjul April 17
At least 30 people protest in Banjul on April 17 asking the government to take actions against perpetrators of abuses during Jammeh regime
Event
On Tuesday, April 17, at least 30 protesters peacefully took the streets of the capital Banjul. Protesters were demanding President Adama Barrow take promised actions against perpetrators of deadly abuses carried out under the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh. Further such protests are likely in the coming weeks if no such actions are taken.
Context
Jammeh refused to concede defeat after losing the December 2016 presidential election, leading to high political tensions across the country. He finally went into exile in Equatorial Guinea on January 21, 2017. The former president is accused of being complicit in forced disappearances and extrajudicial executions committed since 1994.
Advice
Those present in Gambia are advised to monitor the situation and avoid any demonstrations due to the risk of violence.
