Six killed in fighting in Indian Kashmir on April 24; associated protests and clashes reported

Warning

Event

Two Indian security forces (a soldier and a counterinsurgency police officer) and four rebels were killed in clashes that broke out on Tuesday, April 24, in a forest in the south of Tral (Pulwama district; Jammu and Kashmir state). An initial attack by the rebels resulted in the deaths of the two Indian troops, while the four rebels died during the fighting that ensued. The area has been cordoned off and additional troops have been deployed to the region.

Anti-India protests erupted following the clashes in Tral. Clashes between the protesters and security forces have been reported. Further protests and associated violence are possible in the coming days.

Context

Tensions have been particularly high in the region, claimed by both India and Pakistan, in recent months. Social unrest, general strikes, and violent clashes between the Indian authorities and anti-India protesters are common. Recently, on April 1, at least 20 individuals, including 13 suspected militants, were killed in clashes during military operations in the region.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to closely monitor developments to the situation and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. As a reminder, some Western governments advise their citizens against travel to parts of Jammu and Kashmir, notably areas along the Line of Control (LoC), due to the significant risk of violence.
