Jodhpur police implemented increased security measures across the city on Monday, April 23, in preparation for the upcoming verdict in the Asaram Bapu sexual assault case that is scheduled to be announced on Wednesday, April 25. Police expect Asaram sympathizers to arrive in Jodhpur (Rajasthan state) in the coming days and are prepared for clashes between his supporters and police; similar incidents have taken place on several occasions since Asaram's arrest in 2013. Police have stated that they are prepared to deploy paramilitary forces if necessary to quell potential related unrest.

Context

Self-proclaimed godman Asaram Bapu was arrested in 2013 after a minor girl from Saharanpur accused him of sexual assault in his ashram on the outskirts of Jodhpur.

On April 17, the Rajasthan High Court instructed the Jodhpur court to issue its verdict from inside the jail premises where Asaram is held. He faces a maximum of ten years in jail if found guilty.
