Event

Tropical Storm Fakir is expected to pass at about 120 km (75 mi) southwest of Mauritius by the afternoon of Tuesday, April 24 (local time). Hazardous sea and weather conditions are anticipated, including winds up to 100 km/h (60 mph), sea swells, and heavy rainfall; flooding is likely. Transportation disruptions are to be anticipated and all schools and universities have been closed until further notice.

Context

The island experiences an annual cyclone season from November through April, during which time tropical storms and torrential rain can result in significant material damage.
