Tropical Storm Fakir is expected to pass at about 120 km (75 mi) southwest of Mauritius by the afternoon of Tuesday, April 24 (local time). Hazardous sea and weather conditions are anticipated, including winds up to 100 km/h (60 mph), sea swells, and heavy rainfall; flooding is likely. Transportation disruptions are to be anticipated and all schools and universities have been closed until further notice.

Context

The island experiences an annual cyclone season from November through April, during which time tropical storms and torrential rain can result in significant material damage.

All those present in Mauritius are advised to follow local forecasts, confirm travel reservations, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Be prepared to leave immediately if an evacuation order is given; otherwise, remain indoors until authorities have indicated that the storm has passed.
