The heightened measures are being put in place after a series of criminal incidents targeting foreigners have been reported, particularly in southern areas such as Mirissa (Matara district). New measures include 20 additional police stations and an increased number of patrols.

In recent weeks, tourists from the Netherlands and Israel have been harassed in separate incidents, including sexual crimes. Several cases of serious crimes have been reported in the past year.
