Thailand: Songkran Festival celebrations April 13-15

Songkran celebrations to take place from April 13 through April 15; expect crowded conditions and traffic congestion

Warning

Event

Songkran celebrations will be held across Thailand from Friday, April 13, through Sunday, April 15. Heightened security measures, including the deployment of additional police officers and an increased number of road checkpoints, will be implemented nationwide. Security and transportation officials have announced that, in order to reduce traffic congestion, heavy vehicles will be banned from using the country's main roads during the festival.

Demand for hotels (and higher prices) and increased road traffic is to be anticipated throughout Thailand. Thailand's airports are also expecting an increase in passenger traffic ahead of the festival. Delays associated with crowded conditions are possible.

Context

Songkran is a three-day festival traditionally celebrated by paying respect to elders and visiting temples to sprinkle water over Buddha figures. It also known as one of the world's biggest water fights, with crowds of revelers battling in the streets and dousing passers-by.

Advice

Individuals present in Thailand should remain alert, follow all instructions issued by authorities, and avoid particularly crowded areas. Remain on guard against petty crime, which typically rises in large crowds. In addition, individuals should anticipate transportation disruptions and plan ahead for congestion and delays.
