Tonga, Fiji: 6.1-magnitude earthquake April 2; no tsunami warning

Event

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck south of Fiji and Tonga at 17:57 (local time) on Monday, April 2. The epicenter was in the South Pacific approximately 440km (274 mi) south-south west of Nuku‘alofa, Tonga. No tsunami warning has been issued, and shaking was light. Aftershocks are possible.

Context

The area lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a highly active tectonic zone that frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Individuals present in the affected region are advised to be prepared for aftershocks and to adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
