Uber Technologies officially ceased its ride-hailing operations in Vietnam on Monday, April 9. Uber is suspending its services throughout Southeast Asia after a deal to sell its operations to rival Grab. Many Uber drivers have converted to Grab drivers of have been hired by local taxi or motorbike taxi companies. Meanwhile, the Indonesian company Go-Jek is preparing to enter the Vietnamese market. 

Context

Vietnam's Hanoi capital currently has around 20,000 taxis and some 30,000 cars which operate similar to taxis under various brands. There have been reports of overcharging for taxi journeys from airports and tourist hotspots.

Individuals in Vietnam booking a taxi online or through an app are advised to make sure the details of the vehicle and driver match those provided by the company. Check the fare before starting the journey.
