Dominican Republic: Chickenpox outbreak infects thousands

According to health officials, at least 3316 confirmed cases of the chickenpox have been reported throughout the Dominican Republic in recent weeks (as of May 23). Further spread of the disease is expected in the near-term.

Context

Chickenpox is a contagious infection that appears on the skin of an infected individual ten to 21 days after exposure. The infection typically lasts about five to ten days. The rashes on the skin may be accompanied by fever, loss of appetite, headache, and tiredness. The virus typically affects children but can be particularly dangerous in adult cases.
