Warning

Event

Unidentified militiamen attacked the village of Matopolo (Kasai Central) overnight May 20-21. At least seven people were killed and 11 others injured, prompting some 700 local residents to flee the village. The situation appears to be under control as of Tuesday, May 22, with security reinforcements deployed to the area to prevent further attacks.

Context

Militiamen have maintained a heavy presence in the Kasai provinces since April 2016, when the Kamuina Nsapu militia launched an insurgency against the government. Attacks by this and other militias have become commonplace in these areas, claiming the lives of more than 3000 people. The ongoing crisis in the Kasai region brings the estimated total number of the DRC’s internally displaced persons (IDPs) to 1.4 million.

Advice

The political and security situation in DRC is complex. Travelers should consider making contingency plans in the event of outbreaks of violence. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas may be considered off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
