Islamic State (IS) claims knife attack in Paris May 12; at least two dead, including the attacker, and four wounded

The Islamic State (IS) Amaq news agency released a statement in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 13, claiming responsibility for the knife attack at the Place de l'Opéra in Paris. According to the statement, the attacker was a “soldier” of the group. French authorities have opened a terrorism investigation into the incident. As of 00:10 (local time), two people were killed, including the attacker, and four others wounded. Details are still emerging.

Context

At approximately 21:30 on Saturday, May 12, a man armed with a knife started stabbing people at the Place de l'Opéra. Responding police officers shot and killed the suspected attacker. The identity of the suspect has not been confirmed.
