Guatemala: Intense rainy season expected May-July
Intense rainy season forecast for the coming months; flooding and landslides possible
Event
Guatemala is forecast to experience a particularly intense rainy season from May to July, with peak rainfall expected in June. Heavy rainfall may result in flooding and landslides in affected areas, and consequent traffic disruptions and power outages. The alignment of the rainy season with the Pacific and Atlantic hurricane seasons - beginning on May 15 and June 1, respectively - will likely exacerbate these risks.
As of mid-May, heavy rainfall has already been recorded in western and southwestern parts of the country, including in Suchitepéquez, Mazatenango, San Marcos, Retalhuleu, Suchitepéquez, and Escuintla. Traffic disruptions have been reported on the Pan-American Highway.
Context
Guatemala’s rainy season typically runs from May through October.
Advice
Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
