Violence breaks out during local elections in West Bengal on May 14; 12 killed, dozens more injured

Despite significant security measures implemented by state authorities (i.e. 60,000 security personnel deployed), violence broke out Monday, May 14, in various parts of West Bengal state amid local polls (panchayat elections). At least 12 people were killed and some 50 others injured. Polling places were targeted with crude bombs and clashes between rival party supporters broke out in several areas including the North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad East, South Dinajpur, Midnapore and Burdwan districts.
