India: Heatwave continues in northern and central states /update 1

The ongoing heatwave in the northwestern and central states of India is expected to last through Sunday, May 27. On Thursday, May 24, the India Meteorological Department (MID) warned that temperatures could reach up to 45°C (113°F) in Delhi. Extreme heatwave alerts have been issued for the cities of Delhi and Chandigarh and the states of Rajasthan and Haryana. High temperatures were also reported in Madhya Pradesh, the region of Vidarbha, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Localized power outages are possible in these affected areas as the heatwave continues in the coming days.

Advice

IIndividuals in affected areas are advised to stay well hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters [3 pints] of water per day and avoid alcohol) and to avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from noon to 16:00). Wear light, loose-fitting clothing in light colors that cover as much skin as possible. Wear a hat and apply sunscreen regularly. Be especially on guard against symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke in young children and seniors, as they are particularly vulnerable. Do not hesitate to contact emergency services if necessary.
