Warning

Event

Clashes between security forces and separatists militants broke out at an army camp in the village of Kakapora (Kashmir) overnight May 27-28. Two individuals - a solider and a civilian - were killed and three soldiers were wounded. Further clashes between separatist militants and security forces, as well as cross-border fire between Indian and Pakistani forces, are likely in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Since the beginning of May, clashes between Indian forces and both separatists militants and Pakistani forces have increased in the Kashmir region. Tensions were particularly high in the region in February and March 2018, following an attack on an Indian army camp in which six soldiers died.

Advice

Individuals in Kashmir are advised to monitor developments to the situation and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. As a reminder, some Western governments advise their citizens against travel to parts of Jammu and Kashmir, notably areas along the LoC, due to the significant risk of violence.
