India: Ongoing deadly sand and thunderstorms May 14

Over the weekend of May 12-13, more than 70 people lost their lives - and more than 100 others were wounded - in a new series of sandstorms and thunderstorms across India. Powerful winds of over 100 km/hr (62 mph) were recorded in the north, east, and south of the country - bringing down trees, power cables, and houses. The most severely impacted areas include the states of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar as well as the capital New Delhi where Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) experienced dozens of flight delays and diversions. Authorities expect continued violent storms in the north and east through at least Wednesday, May 16. 

Context

This new series of storms comes just 10 days after a sandstorm killed more than 130 people, mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttarakhand states. Storms typically hit India at this time of year; however, this current rainy season appears to be particularly violent and deadly.
