India: Tourist killed in protest in Kashmir May 8
Indian tourist killed during protest in Kashmir May 8; additional unrest likely in the coming days and weeks
Event
On Tuesday, May 8, an Indian tourist was killed when his minibus was caught in a pro-separatist protest in Kashmir and Jammu while traveling to Gulmarg. The protesters threw stones at the minibus, killing the tourist and injuring several other passengers. Demonstrations had broken out earlier in the day in response to a raid by Indian security forces on May 6 that left several suspected separatist militants dead.
Additional raids on suspected militant positions and clashes between protesters and security forces are possible in Kashmir in the coming days and weeks. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected near protest sites.
Context
Tensions have been particularly high in Kashmir, claimed by both India and Pakistan, in recent months. Social unrest, general strikes, and violent clashes between the Indian authorities and anti-India protesters are common. On May 6, at least six suspected militants were killed by Indian security forces while three officers were wounded in Shopian district (Jammu and Kashmir state) during a raid on suspected militants's positions. Clashes and protests between the separatist protesters and security forces have immediately erupted following the incident.
Advice
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to closely monitor developments to the situation and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. As a reminder, some Western governments advise their citizens against travel to parts of Kashmir, notably areas along the Line of Control (LoC), due to the significant risk of violence.
