Spain: Madrid Metro workers to strike June 1, 4, 8, and 15

Madrid Metro workers are reportedly planning to stage strikes on June 1, 4, 8, and 15 to denounce Metro management's decision to not inform employees that there is asbestos in the Metro train cars until December 2017 after discovering it in 2003. At least four people have been recently diagnosed with cancer due to asbestos exposure. Striking workers are also demanding that Metro carry out medical examinations on potentially affected employees.

On June 1, Metro service will be suspended from 06:05 to 10:15 (local time) and from 13:20 to 21:30. The Community of Madrid administration has, however, guaranteed minimum Metro services. Notably, on June 15, Metro workers are expected to strike during the morning hours and then rally outside of the Assembly of Madrid. Significant Metro transit disruptions, consequent road traffic congestion, and associated demonstrations are expected in Madrid on the strike dates.

Striking metro workers claim that Metro management did not provide timely and adequate information regarding the presence of asbestos in the Metro train cars for employees to sufficiently protect themselves.
