Thailand: 36 foreigners arrested in raids

On Thursday, May 17, Thai authorities announced that 36 foreigners had been arrested by the Tourist Police for allegedly being in the country illegally as a part of "X-Ray Outlaw Foreigners" operations. The police raided places across the country including in Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya (Chon Buri), Hat Yai (Songkhla), and Chiang Mai. According to the reports, the raids were conducted at tourist spots, international schools, and language schools. Detained individuals have been charged with overstaying their visas and illegal entry, among other violations.

Context

There are potentially severe repercussions for violating visa regulations in Thailand, including fines and imprisonment. Authorities fine individuals THB 500 (USD 15) for each overstayed day. Furthermore, individuals caught by immigration police are subject to detention until fines are paid and flights out of the country are secured.
