Chile: High air pollution in central regions June 4

Air pollution warnings in effect for central Chile June 4; health concerns

Warning

Event

High levels of air pollution are being reported in areas throughout central Chile as of early Monday, June 4. Purple “emergency” alerts, the highest level, are in effect in the following communes: Chillán, Valdivia, Osorno, and Coyhaique. Red “pre-emergency” alerts, one step lower, are in effect in Los Angeles, Curanilahue, Padre Las Casas, and La Unión. Lower orange, yellow, and green alerts are in effect in various other areas, including the capital Santiago.

Driving and industrial restrictions are possible in the above areas.

Context

High pollution levels can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation and aggravate cardiovascular and respiratory conditions (such as asthma). During periods of high air pollution the government typically advises against all outdoor exercise and recommends that schools cancel physical education classes. Vulnerable individuals - e.g. children, seniors, pregnant women, and people suffering from asthma and other respiratory issues - should be particularly cautious and consider wearing masks covering their nose and mouth when outdoors.

Advice

Individuals present in the above areas are advised to monitor the situation in the coming days, limit outdoor activity, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
