Anti-corruption group Marcha Verde to hold events in Santo Domingo on June 17

Informational

Event

The anti-corruption group Marcha Verde (Green March) will organize a “citizens resistance camp” and concert in the capital Santo Domingo on Sunday, June 17. The events - organized to denounce corruption within the ruling PLD party (Partido de la Liberación Dominicana) party - will be held in front of the Supreme Court building. Clashes between participants and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

Marcha Verde has organized regular demonstrations across the country over the past year to demand an end to impunity and widespread government corruption. There has been growing public outcry over recent revelations of more than a decade of allegedly corrupt government contracts and bribery linked with the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

Advice

Individuals in present Santo Domingo are advised to avoid the area as a precaution.
