DRC: Suspected ADF militants kill three policemen in Butembo June 1
Suspected ADF militants attack the town of Butembo June 1; at least three police officers killed
Event
On the morning of Friday, June 1 (local time), suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel fighters attacked the town of Butembo (North Kivu). According to local sources, at least three police officers and one ADF militant were killed in the attack. Further militant attacks and retaliatory military operations are possible in the coming days.
Context
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, including North Kivu, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups (such as the ADF) and local self-defense militias (Maï-Maï militias) have led to continued insecurity in the area.
Advice
Those present in Butembo are advised to monitor the situation and to maintain contact with their home governments (adhere to any official directives).
More generally, a number of Western governments advise their citizens against travel to the east and northeast of the country due to poor security conditions, including the presence of armed groups and a high risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice should be sought prior to travel.
