Campesino marches in Guatemala City June 12; traffic disruptions likely

Warning

Event

The CODECA organization, which represents campesinos (peasant farmers), has called for marches to take place in the capital Guatemala City on Tuesday, June 12. Demonstrators are expected to gather beginning at 06:00 (local time) at four different points of the city - Plaza Obelisco, El Trébol, Metronorte, and the intersection of Calzada Roosevelt and Anillo Periférico - before converging at the Presidential Palace around 14:00. Roadblocks and significant traffic congestion are possible. Violent confrontations between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

The protest is being held to demand the resignation of President Jimmy Morales and all 158 members of Congress, as well as to denounce recent killings of campesino leaders.

Advice

Individuals in Guatemala are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution and allow for extra time to reach their destinations.
