India: Curfew imposed in Shillong June 1

Police impose a curfew in Shillong (Meghalaya state) after violent clashes between communities on June 1

Authorities implemented an indefinite curfew in parts of the city of Shillong (Meghalaya state) early on Friday, June 1, following clashes. The curfew has been effect in the districts of Cantolment, Jaiaw, Lama Villa, Lumdiengjri, Mawkhar, Mawlong Hat, Mawprem, Mission, Qualapatty, Raitsamthiah, Sunny Hills, Umsohsun, Wahingdoh, and Wahthapbru since 04:00.

Clashes broke out late on Thursday, May 31, resulting in several individuals being injured, some property damage, and at least three arrests. The clashes occurred in the Them Aew Mawlong area. The mob was dispersed by police around 02:00 (local time).

Context

It appears that a bus driver was sent to the hospital after being beaten by a mob for almost hitting a women with his bus. Later in the day, his colleagues came to take revenge, leading to the clashes.
