Libya: Militia deployed to Tripoli Airport (TIP) June 14

Al-Halbous militia reportedly deployed to Tripoli International Airport (TIP) on June 14

Warning

Event

According to local reports, the 301 Al-Halbous militia has been deployed to protect Tripoli International Airport (TIP) as of Thursday, June 14. This is reportedly due to fears that Zintani militias were planning to seize the area. However, the Zintani militias appear to remain - as of 11:00 (local time) - at the 4th brigade headquarters in Az Aziziyah, west of TIP.

Context

Libya has been divided by rival governments and factions with their own militias and political parties since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. The security situation in Libya remains precarious and the country is likely to remain unstable in the near-term amid the ongoing civil war.

Advice

Individuals in Tripoli are advised avoid the airport area, monitor the situation, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
