Event

Protests over rising fuel costs were held nationwide on Friday, June 8, and Monday, June 11. Drivers in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Nis, Novi Pazar, and other major cities stopped their vehicles on main highways and roads. The demonstration caused significant traffic disruptions, blocking traffic for up to an hour. Further protests and consequent traffic disruptions are likely in the coming weeks.

Context

Fuels costs have increased by USD 1.5 (1.3 euros) in recent months. Demonstrators are calling for the government to reduce taxes on fuel, which account for approximately 55 percent of the cost of gas.
